It is reported that it was here, during the excavation of the 'stage house' in 1960, the stone was found with an inscription included a mention of a notorious Pontius Pilate, prefect of the Roman province of Judea from 26 to 36 AD. He apparently had a permanent residence in Caesarea, and the stone was part of a dedicatory inscription on an obelisk or temple in honor of the Roman emperor Tiberius.
