On April 9, 1940, Fort Odderoya underwent the most severe test in its history. At 5 o'clock in the morning, hiding in dense fog, a German naval detachment led by the light cruiser Karlruhe entered to the Kristiansand fjord. In addition to the cruiser, the invasion forces included three torpedo boats and 7 other ships, including a transport with 1000 soldiers. The attack was supported by dive bombers.
