Batardo dam

The fortress is surrounded by a wide wet moat (ditch with water). It is impossible for enemy ships to penetrate to the ditches from the side of the river, since the ditches there are blocked off by specially constructed dams called batardo. The picture shows the northern part of the ditch. The Fredrikstad Bridge is visible in the background.
