Prehistoric fortification of Torsburgen

Torsburgen is a calcareous plateau, surrounded by a wall of 2 km length. Torsburgen was used as a shelter for the entire population of Gotland in old times of war and disaster. The population of the island in the good times was barely more than 10 thousand people. In 9-10 AD the fortress was strengthened the Vikings used as a base for their predatory expeditions all around the Baltic region.
