Neutral country must have military options to preserve its neutrality and not to be dragged into the war. After the war, Russia, and other countries have demanded that Sweden could ensure its neutrality. Swedes have decided to cover the entrance to Fårösund by coastal artillery and in 1884 construction of 3 coastal batteries begun. They must cover the mine fields in the strait.
