In 1985, concerned citizens organized the 'Pro Bengtscar Association', which managed to lease the island and the lighthouse building and begin some restoration work (doors, frames, glass, heating). A couple of years later, the building was leased to the University of Turku, which by 1995 had completed restoration work and the island was open to the public.
