Approaching Bengtskär Island

Bengtskär is located 25 km to the southwest from the Hanko Peninsula. This place is very dangerous for shipping; the seabed around Bengtskär and the Hitis Islands is strewn with shipwrecks. The need for a lighthouse has been long overdue. In 1905, the large steamship Helsingfors sank here, after which the tsarist government finally allocated funds for lighthouse construction.
