The whole city is built from such stone. The photo does not fully convey the color and texture, but this stone, which is called as 'Jerusalem stone' defines all the local air. In general, its color greatly depends on the time of day, year, lighting, weather and mental state of the person looking at these walls.
The lower sign with the name of the street going through the gate is curious. During the British Mandate, all inscriptions and signs in the Old City were made in Arabic and English, but after the Six Day War, Hebrew inscriptions were added on top.
