External side of the fortifications

The fortifications are certainly new-made for the some part, but they are of interest as examples of few survived long-term fortification of the 18th century. The Swedes began to actively fortify the city immediately after the “Great Hard Time,” as the Northern War of 1700-1721 is called here, because Vilmanstrand (Lappeenranta) turned into an important border fortress.
