Streets of modern Lappeenranta

In the foreground is the monument 'Mother Karelia' (Äiti-Karjala), erected in 1993 in memory of those who did not return from the wars of 1939-1944. The figure of a mother with her son in her arms forms a cross as a symbol of death. 5,500 names of the fallen are carved on the granite walls around the monument.
