Rampart of the ancient city

The rampart of so called Okolny (circuitous) city of Novgorod has been preserved for it's considerable part. The picture has been taken from the western side of the city (Sofia side). Once this rampart was much higher and there were tyn (fence), gorodni wooden chopped walls with stone towers on it. Today there is none of this, but the WWII trenches of August 1941 remained - the last line of Soviet defense in Novgorod city.
