'Wet' ditch

The fortifications of the Okolny city were about 11 km long, of which 6 km were along ramparts. The basis of the rampart was a wooden-earthen massif with transverse and longitudinal logs, interspersed with pressed earth and stones to resist slipping. The deep ditch in front of the fortifications could have been filled with water from Volkhov river.
