The cathedral underwent reconstruction in the 17th-19th centuries - pitched roof, buttresses, in 1830-1832 the northern gallery was partially rebuilt. In 1893-1900 the cathedral underwent a major overhaul, equivalent to a small fire: the outer and inner walls were plastered with a thick and durable layer of cement plaster along the beacons, hiding and smoothing out all the unevenness and “irregularities” of ancient Russian architecture. The result was a stylization in the so called 'Bilibin style'.
