This church stands on the ruins of the temple of Boris and Gleb (1163), which in turn stood on the foundation of the oldest wooden temple in Novgorod and all of Rus' - the wooden Sophia with thirteen towers, which stood at the end of the bishop's street (Piskuplya). In 1682, the St. Boris and Gleb Cathedral collapsed and the chapel of Andrei Stratilatai that remained from it became a separate temple.
