At one time, these gates were called Korsun gates - supposedly, Prince Vladimir got them in Byzantium during a campaign. In the 19th century there was an opinion that this gate was obtained by the Novgorodians during the ever-memorable campaign against Sigtuna in 1187. However, in reality, the gate was made in 1153 in Magdeburg for the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Plock and came to Novgorod no earlier than the middle of the 15th century.
