St. Sophia Cathedral: eastern facade

The original volume of the 11th century is surrounded on three sides by extensions - two-story galleries of the 14th-15th centuries with chapels in honor of various saints. It is believed that in the Middle Ages the cathedral was not plastered and apparently looked much more picturesque with its walls made of wild Volkhov flagstone.
