Landmark

A recently erected monument in honor of the Orekhovetsky Peace between the Novgorod Republic and Sweden in 1323. The peace treaty 'for eternity' resolved the territorial dispute over Karelia, demarcated the Swedish-Novgorod border first time from the Gulf of Finland along the Sestra River, to Lake Saimaa and further to the Gulf of Bothnia. Trade rules were also stipulated, it was forbidden to build new cities in Karelia, and the procedure for extraditing criminals was established ('... whoever does something bad and runs either to you or to us, extradite him according to justice'). In the same year, the Oreshek fortress was founded. In the background are the remains of the Novgorod fortress walls of the 14th century.
