The downtown is seen also. In the old times this canal was demonstrated as the top achievement of Russian waterworks to foreigners. And it was true. Before the canal's construction third of all ships of the New Ladoga - Shlisselburg line was lost because of frequent Ladoga storms. May, 22, 1719, emperor Peter I opened the construction work just at this place.
