View of the canal
The canal had granite covering of embankments and bed, nice cast-iron railings and ladders. The barges were moved by horse rigs. Little passenger steamships connected Shlisselburg with New Ladoga, Volkhov and St.Petersburg. Nowadays the canal is engulfed by sand and garbage and dammed at few places.
