In the entire history of the Shlisselburg prison, there was one successful escape from this building. The caretaker of the Gdov City School, Ivan Romashov, imprisoned in the fortress for drawing up a republican constitution for Russia, on the night of April 5, 1849, escaped from the cell on the top floor with the help of a guard soldier. Unfortunately, he was captured a few hours later in the city of Shlisselburg and taken to the Secret House of the Citadel. He stayed there until 1867, after which he was sent to Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, where he died three years later.
