The first fortification works on the island began in 1749 according to the plans of the creator of Sveaborg fortress Augustin Ehrensvard. In 1750, the bastions of Gyllenborg and Tessin on the western side of the island were constructed. In 1757–1762, three stone barracks were ready, and a bakery was operating. The picture shows a view of Länsi Mustosaari island from its north-west side. The artillery batteries were built on top of the old Swedish bastions in 1900s. In the background, Kuivasaare Island with it's 12-dm turret battery is seen.
