In 1918 houses on the island served as concentration camp barracks, then for 30 years after as military barracks. In 1946–1956, Sisusaare island shipyard workers lived on here. The shipyard was owned by Valmet Oy (Valtion Metallitehtaat or State Metalworking) at that time. In 1995-1998, the buildings underwent major alterations, equipped with very nice apartments, which for a considerable amount of money can be rented by anyone who likes a fortification. In the rooms the old Russian tile stoves of the Russian period are preserved.
