During the Livonian War (1558 - 1583) Kiek in de Kök tower was subjected to repeated and fierce attacks by Russian troops, but, like Revel itself, it did not surrender. Russian cannonballs are still sit within its walls. The tower was used as a prison, arsenal and powder magazine. In Soviet times there was a branch of the City Museum, and for now (2009) - renovation.
