King Eric XIV of Sweden (1533-1577) was a young man, not without abilities, educated and not stupid. He pursued an active foreign policy, annexed the ancestral Swedish lands, had high ratings, but over time, on the basis of unlimited autocracy, he lost his mind (schizophrenia), became less predictable and, so that Sweden would not be subject to sanctions because of his insanity, his brothers Johan and Karl overthrew him and imprisoned with his family here in Turku Castle.
