Fiskarporten and Powder Tower

Name Fiskarporten can be translated as "Fish Gate". The Gate were built around 1400, they connected the city and the harbor and the fish market. Near the gate stands Kruttornet (Powder Tower). The tower was built even before the construction of the city wall in 1100 to protect this important place of the urban economy. The tower has three floors with stone vaults. In the 17th century it was used as a powder magazine, and a century later - as a city jail. Fiskarporten is considered as one of the oldest buildings at the European North.
